PET TRUSTS
You may not have given much thought about the options to care for your dog after your passing.
Many of you are familiar with various trusts used to transfer or dispose of your estate, but you may not know that, since
2008, Pet Trusts are legal in California.
In
2008, California passed a law ensuring that pet owners' wishes are carried out rather than leaving them to the good faith
of an honorary trustee. In effect, the law allows a bequest to pets to be formal and enforceable rather than merely an informal
moral obligation. Only, Georgia, Kentucky,
Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia do not have laws authorizing pet trusts at this
time
Here are sites that will introduce you to the subject. Your attorney can create the documents for you
and answer further questions you may have.
