"The disposition of noble dogs is to be gentle with people they know and the opposite with those they don't know...How, then, can the dog be anything other than a lover of learning since it defines what's its own and what's alien."
~ Plato

"DOG, n. A subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world's worship.... [H]is master works for the means wherewith to purchase the idle wag of the Solomonic tail, seasoned with a look of tolerant recognition." ~ Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

NEW FOUNTAIN HOSE/WASH-OFF ATTACHMENT

Pam has purchased and installed a new attachment that will be of great help in washing your dog.  Check out the lower bowl of the green fountain and you will see a white apparatus consisting of a hand-held sprinkler and a hose fastened to the nozzle by two band-clamps.

The best way to use it is first to unlock the clamp (use the key hanging on the fence opposite the fountain) and compress the side button to start the water flow and then turn the circular lever on the side of the bracket to select flow to either hose or the sprinkler (see pictures below).

Remember when you are finishing using it, please lock the clamp and return the key to the hook on the fence.

late on Friday, 8/15/08, a seal appeared off the park

its strange movements made us think it might be sick

ONE EXTREME TO THE OTHER
Until we requested that they stop, Park and Rec was watering the park every day which, because of poor draingage, was causing puddles to appear.
Now, you can see they have stopped watering altogther and grass is dying.  When we requested that they stop the daily watering, we asked that the park be watered no more than three times per week.  The water used on all the field is recycled and should have no bearing on water restrictions during the dry season.
Park and Rec has been informed and hopefully the grass will be saved, while puddling will be minimized or avoided.

Michael Farthing checking it out

Seal appears off park.

What may have been a seal pup appeared about 10 feet off the mid-park late afternoon on August 15, 2008.  It may have been ill, lost or perhaps just checking out the dogs and people.  A small crowd of observers formed.  Everyone kept their dogs in check and no dog made any effort to get into the water.

The seal appeared near the location where many people swim their dogs and where we have been discussing prohibiting swimming to protect the shoreline.

It was very difficult to call for help.  We couldn't easily get the Marine Mammal Center's number and, frankly, the Humane Society was not helpful, they actually said they would only "try" to reach the Marine Mammal Center.  We called 911 and the CHP person responded wonderfully, getting the information and passing it on to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.

The MMC called right back and said that they had been to the dog park earlier and were unable to capture it, but that they would continue monitoring it and would come by the park tomorrow.

The seal disappeared suddenly and was not seen again.

Over the years, many seals have been seen swimming near the dog park, but they usually have remained farther from the shore and seemed healthy.  If a seal is seen again, and your dog is a swimmer, you should hook-up immediately.  Seals are very strong and can be VERY dangerous.

Although unlikely to be needed again, several park users have added the MMC to their mobil phones as a precaution.

Pam, an enthusiastic newcomer to our park, generously donated
four new stailess steel water bowls.

The advantages of stainless steel bowls were so obvious that we
have replaced all park bowls and now are 100% stainless steel.  Not being porous, they will not harbor algae and other growths.
They are far easier to clean.  They can be "nested" for easy carrying home for cleaning.
They will not require a pre-bleaching before going into the dishwasher.  They will not crack over time and should last for years.
