Amenities/Guidelines

"A dog's best friend is his illiteracy."  ~ Ogden Nash

Amenities
The Mill Valley Dog Park offers exciting ways for both you and your dog to have  great experiences.
♦BEACH At the southeastern corner of the park, there is a wide beach for swimming in Richardson Bay.  The center 40 feet of the beach bottom is filled with small/medium rocks and is very firm, with little mud.  Keep in mind that the Bay is tidal and is salt water.  Please do not let your dog swim anywhere else along the dog park shore.  The shore is very fragile and is being damaged by human and dog activities.
♦WALKING TRACK A wide, 800-foot, gravel track   encircles the dog park.  It is ideal for both human and dog walking.  Many park users enjoy getting in a few laps with groups of two and four-legged friends during their visits.
♦AGILITY Three agility stations are located in the "chips" area at the southern end of the park.  Here, your dog can learn to climb an incline step ladder, go under and on top of the "box" and strut across the top of a "bridge".  These stations were designed and built for dogs.  Children should not be allowed to play on them.
♦SPACE -the final frontier.  The central two acres of the park are flat and a joy for the dog who likes to RUN--big time!   Groups of dogs are often seen chasing each other in large circles.
♦WATER  Water jugs and stainless steel water bowls are provided at each of the benches except those in the "chips" area and near the beach.
♦LOST AND FOUND A lost and found box is located on the wooden fence adjacent to the bayside entry to the dog park.
♦BULLETIN BOARD There is a bulletin board close to the park entrance near the fountain on the Bike Path side.  This board is open for posting of any dog-related  material.   We have not been able to find an all-weather board that also is open to posters and so, the board will be removed for the rainy season.  We're working on it!
♦HOT?/COLD? There is a thermometer attached to the southernmost tree of the small grove of trees at the mid-park sitting area across from the mid-park gate and another behind the two wooden benches at the head of the Park.  Don't forget that dogs do not perspire and, while you may feel comfortable, your dog may be seriously overheated.  In mid-afternoon, shade is scarce.  Let your dog relax or head to the beach.
♦HUMAN INTERACTION  Like all dog parks, ours provides exceptional opportunities for dog-lovers to meet and exchange tons of canine information.  Collectively, the "core" of Mill Valley Dog Park users has enormous knowledge and experience with dogs.  Take advantage of it!  But don't forget to keep track of where your dog is and what it is doing!

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog." ~ Edward Hoagland (b. 1932) U.S. novelist, essayist

"Why, that dog is practically a Phi Beta Kappa. She can sit up and beg, and she can give her paw - I don't say she will, but she can." ~ Dorothy Parker (1893–1967) U.S. humorous writer

"My Flush clearly understands articulate language.... "Dinner," "cakes," "milk," "go downstairs," "go out," everybody's name in the house, "go and kiss Miss Barrett," "kiss" (abstractedly) — "kiss the hand," "kiss the face" — my Flush understands and applies all that... yes, all that — and a great deal more." ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who also tried to teach her cocker spaniel reading and arithmetic, so she could play dominoes with Flush while confined to bed due to illness

"Our dogs will love and admire the meanest of us, and feed our colossal vanity with their uncritical homage." ~ Agnes Repplier

IF ONLY ...

POOP- the universal problem in dog parks.  Our park relies on the voluntary help of users to maintain its cleanliness.  Please clean-up after your dog.  It's great to socialize with our park's accomplished and interesting people, but keep an eye on what your dog is doing and be ready to "pick it up" (see procedure below).  There are two black "mailboxes" in the park; one near the entrance on the Bay side and one on the Bike Path side.  They are for plastic pick-up bags.  Help the park by saving your plastic bags at home and then putting them in these mailboxes. You can deposit in any of the waste containers.  DON'T FORGET THAT WE SHARE BAYFRONT PARK WITH OTHERS.  PLEASE PICK-UP ON BOTH ACCESS PATHS- BAYSIDE AND BIKE PATH SIDE .                 THANK YOU!!
BALLS/TOYS You are free to use any ball or toy you find lying in the park, but check first to be sure someone else isn't using it AND whatever your dog plays with, please don't take it home if you didn't bring it.  THE MILL VALLEY DOG PARK IS NOT A PET SUPPLY CENTER.  That helps ensure that more dogs have something to play with while here.  Donations of balls are always welcome.  Thanks again!
DOG BEHAVIOR  The Mill Valley Dog Park is exceptionally safe.  We expect you, as a responsible dog-owner, to be alert to any behavior that may be dangerous or disruptive.  Every one of us has had to just hook up Fido and leave at least once.
SWIMMING As said in the Amenities section, please don't let your dog swim along the Bay except in the beach area at the southeastern corner.  Let's make sure that our park remains intact for many generations of dogs and people.
DRINKING WATER  The only source of fresh water in the park is the green water fountain at the "head" of the park on the Bike Path side. We have devised a means to bring drinking water to the "sitting" stations throughout the park which consists of large water jugs and stainless steel bowls.  They do not fill themselves.  If you would like to learn how to fill them, please contact Fred at MillValleyDogs@aol.com or call 415-810-6752.  Be a real help and pitch in.
WASH-OFF There is no regular wash-off in the park.  The small hose attached to the lower bowl at the green fountain can be used with limited effectiveness for small dogs.  If your dog becomes very dirty, you should take it to the dog beach for a quick wade or swim if you can.  There is a hose near the firehouse across from the northern end of Bayfront Park over the wooden bridge that can be used, but it is about 3/4 mile from the Dog Park.
